Herpes Zoster (Shingles) Diagnosis & Treatment

Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body. In some cases, the virus can reactivate later in life and cause shingles.

Shingles typically appears as a painful rash on one side of the face or body. The rash consists of red, blister-like lesions that can be itchy and uncomfortable. In some cases, shingles can also cause fever, headache, and fatigue.

Shingles is more common in older adults and people with compromised immune systems. It is not contagious, but the virus can be spread to someone who has not had chickenpox before. If this happens, the person will develop chickenpox, not shingles.

Treatment for shingles typically involves the use of antiviral medications to reduce the severity and duration of the infection. Pain management may also be necessary to help control the discomfort associated with the rash.

To prevent the spread of shingles, it is important to practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands frequently and avoiding close contact with others until the rash has crusted over. If you have shingles, it is also important to keep the affected area clean and dry to prevent the virus from spreading.

If you think you may have shingles, contact us today for diagnosis and treatment. While shingles is not a life-threatening condition, it can be quite painful and discomforting.
