Epidermal Biopsy

A biopsy is a medical procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed from the body for examination. The tissue sample is then analyzed by a pathologist, a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis of diseases through the examination of tissue samples.

There are several different types of biopsy, including incisional biopsy, excisional biopsy, shave biopsy, and punch biopsy. An incisional biopsy involves the removal of a small piece of tissue from a larger abnormal growth or lesion. An excisional biopsy involves the removal of the entire abnormal growth or lesion. A shave biopsy involves the use of a razor-like tool to remove a small sample of tissue from the surface of the skin. Punch biopsies are procedures in which a small circular tool is used to remove a tube-shaped sample that includes the deeper layers of skin (epidermis, dermis and superficial fat). These biopsies produce full-thickness test specimens and are typically used when skin disease is expected to involve the deeper layers of the skin.

Biopsy procedures are typically performed by a trained and licensed medical professional, such as a dermatologist or a surgeon. The procedure may be performed in a medical office, a hospital, or an outpatient surgical center. Depending on the type of biopsy being performed, the procedure may be done using local anesthesia, which numbs the area being biopsied, or general anesthesia, which puts the person to sleep.

The results of a biopsy are typically available within a few days to a week. The biopsy results can help to confirm or rule out a diagnosis and guide further treatment recommendations.

Biopsy procedures are generally safe, with minimal risk of complications. It is important to follow all post-procedure care instructions provided by the medical professional to minimize the risk of infection and other complications.
